St Peter’s at Edinburgh International Book Festival

14/06/2017

We are excited to be taking part in this year’s Edinburgh International Book Festival.

On 13 August, our creative director Angus and architectural historian Diane Watters will tell the fascinating story of St Peter’s Seminary. Described as both the best and worst Scottish building of the 20th century, St Peter’s has a habit of splitting opinions. Built in the 1960s as a college for the Catholic Church to train student priests, St Peter’s was only in use for fourteen years. As an architectural venture, many would say that it failed. But after decades of abandonment, the ruins of St Peter’s are about to be revived as a cultural space. Angus and Diane will explore the birth, death and renewal of this remarkable building. Tickets on sale HERE from 20 June 2017.

On 28th August, Angus will return to Edinburgh to weigh in on a debate about the need for public gathering spaces in the 21st century. In Ancient Greece, the agora was the place for public assembly, where people gathered to have conversations about everything from business, politics and current affairs to the nature of the universe and the divine. In 2017, with so much of our interaction taking place online, do we still need public spaces for democratic debate and discussion? Angus will form part of a panel of speakers attempting to answer that question in a lively debate. Tickets on sale HERE from 20 June 2017
